This is an article I had done going into some of Dave Matthews' songs:
Behind Dave Mathews What Some Of His Songs Mean:
By: Susannah Bailey
Article Review: in this  article, we will go deep into some of Dave Matthews’ songs “Ants Marching”, “Crash into Me”, “Funny the Way It Is”, “Gray Street”, and “Where Are You Going”.

“Ants Marching”
This song is about people who do the same thing every day. They get up and do the same thing, they go to work the same way (just like those around them), they work the same way, and go home and do the same thing; only to start their repetitive cycle all over again. Dave compares the people in his song to ants moving in a single file line all doing the same thing as they go into the ant hill, but his people are not ants, and have no hill to go into, they are just people going into the “normal” cycle of life (do the same thing every day, and do it just like all the other “normal’s”). They must be the same as everyone else, and do the same thing every day. “He wakes up in the morning Does his teeth bite to eat and he's rolling Never changes a thing The week ends the week begins” this is a part of the 1st verse of “Ants Marching”, it clearly states that he wakes up, eats and brushes his teeth, then he leaves for work, and at the beginning of each week he starts off doing the same thing, and he ends the week doing the same thing. He never stops doing the same thing, all week long, week in and week out he never changes things up. This song shows how people can be normal, and dull, and they will get tired of that sometimes. “Driving in on this highway All these cars and upon the sidewalk
People in every direction No words exchanged No time to exchange
When all the little ants are marching Red and black antennas waving they all do it the same
they all do it the same way” this is a quote from the 3rd verse. This person is observing a car wreck, as he is driving. He sees people all fleeing, just like red and black ants waving their antennas around for help, or because they are scared. The people are scared of the wreck, and so they all flee the same way. This part of the song states that people all do the same thing every day, yes, but they do all the same things the same way (the way everyone else does it). Over all this song tells of people that never change, they are boring, and remind others of ants always doing the same thing.

“Crash into Me”
This song is about someone who wants his girlfriend back, he is sad. He still loves her, but she does not love him anymore. He keeps thinking about her, but she won’t leave his mind. He loved her so much, and now he doesn’t have her. “I'm bare boned and crazy for you” this is a quote from the 2nd verse, it tells you how much he loves her. “You come crash into me” this line in the chorus tells you that he wants her back; he wants her to “come crash into” him and love him again. He wants to be able to love her again. He misses her.

“Funny the Way It Is”
This song is about a whole bunch of irony, one part is good, and one is bad. “Lying in the park on a beautiful day Sunshine in the grass, and the children play Siren’s passing, fire engine red Someone’s house is burning down on a day like this” this is a part of the 1st verse, it says that it is a beautiful day, yet someone’s house is on fire and burning down. This part explains that even though your life is great someone else’s is not so great. “Funny the way it is, if you think about it one kid walks 10 miles to school, another’s dropping out” this part is from the 4th verse, it says that one kid has to walk 10 miles just to learn, and he tries really hard, but the kid who lives close to school drops out, because he thinks he is to cool for school. This line tells you that sometimes what you want is hard to get, and you must try hard; it also says that some people cannot see what is best for them, so they give up, while the person who does not give up, tries hard. This song also compares the way the world used to be, with the way it is now. “Standing on a bridge, watch the water passing under me it must’ve been much harder when there was no bridge just water now the world is small, remember how it used to be with mountains and oceans and winters and rivers and stars.”
"Grey Street"
This song is about the struggle to survive. In this song, a woman is struggling with depression, or some other form of mental illness. She has to struggle with so much, and wants to give up, but never does. “I dreamed myself thousand times around the world
But I can't get out of this place
There's an emptiness inside her
And she'd do anything to fill it in
But all the colors mix together
To grey, and it breaks her heart.” This is a part from the 2nd verse, it tells you that she wants to get somewhere with her life, but she cannot. She wants to go somewhere, but she can’t. “Oh how she wishes it was different
She prays to God most every night
And though she swears He doesn't listen
There's still a hope in her He might
She says I pray
But they fall on deaf ears
Am I supposed to take it on myself
To get out of this place
There's a loneliness inside her
And she'd do anything to fill it in
And though it's red blood bleeding from her now,
It feels like cold blue ice in her heart.” This is from the 3rd verse, it also states of how she wants to get somewhere with her life, but it also tells you that she prays about it, but she thinks no one hears her. She feels a dark ice cold void in her heart. “Oh there's an emptiness insider her
And she'd do anything to fill it in
And though it's red blood bleeding from her now
It's more like cold blue ice in her heart
She feels like kicking out all the
windows
And setting fire to this life
She could change everything about her
Using colors bold and bright
But all the colors mix together
To grey.” This part is from the last verse, it talks about how she wants to basically die, because she cannot take her terrible life anymore. It also says that she tries to make her life colorful, but the only colors she has are brown and white, which only make gray (depression).
“Where Are You Going”
This song is about where ever you go, you cannot go anywhere without the one you love. It’s about how he wants to be where ever his love is.
